Live-in Care vs a Care Home: Which Is Right for Your Family?

When a family member reaches the point where they need consistent daily support, many families assume the only realistic option is a care home. In reality, live-in care — where a dedicated, trained carer moves into the home to provide round-the-clock support — is a genuine and often preferable alternative.

This article sets out the key differences between live-in care and residential care, to help families make a more informed decision.

What Is Live-in Care?

Live-in care means a professional carer lives in the individual’s own home, providing continuous one-to-one support throughout the day and being on hand overnight. The carer assists with personal care, medication management, meals, mobility, and companionship — while the individual remains surrounded by their own belongings, their routines, their community, and their family.

At Lamora Healthcare, our live-in care is nurse-led. Our Registered Manager — a qualified RGN with over 20 years of clinical experience — oversees every live-in package, carrying out a comprehensive care needs assessment before care begins and reviewing the plan whenever needs change.

The Key Differences

• Environment: Live-in care keeps the individual in their own home. A care home places them in a communal residential setting.

• One-to-one attention: Live-in care provides a dedicated carer for one person. In a care home, staff are typically shared across multiple residents.

• Continuity: A good live-in care arrangement involves the same carer or a small team. Care homes often have high staff turnover and shift patterns that mean residents see many different faces.

• Independence and routine: Live-in care works around the individual’s existing routine. Care homes operate to institutional timetables.

• Couples: For couples where both need support, live-in care can support both simultaneously — often at a cost comparable to one care home placement.

What About Cost?

Cost is often the primary concern for families comparing options. The honest answer is that live-in care and a good residential care home are broadly comparable in cost — with live-in care typically ranging from £1,200 to £1,900 per week depending on the level of clinical complexity.

For individuals who may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding — where the NHS pays for care in full because the person has a primary health need — live-in care can be arranged at no cost to the family. Local authority funding may also contribute to live-in care costs in some circumstances.

When Is a Care Home the Better Option?

Live-in care is not suitable for everyone. A care home may be more appropriate where the individual’s needs have progressed to the point where they require nursing home-level clinical input that cannot be safely replicated at home, where the home environment cannot be safely adapted to meet care needs, or where the individual genuinely prefers communal living and the social interaction a care home provides.

The right choice depends on the individual — their health needs, their preferences, their home environment, and their financial circumstances. We would always encourage families to explore both options thoroughly before making a decision.
